The Captive Audience By Allan Gurganus - 1492 Words

The Captive Audience was written by Allan Gurganus, Gurganus writes on the subject of how the military changed his views on a political view. Gurganus starts the short story by mentioning that he was ashamed of photographs with his uniform on. In contrast to his subordinates, Gurganus wore his uniform in a depressing manner. The soldier was not proud of his service, to the extreme point Allan would keep his clothes in a dark meat locker. The reason for this recluse manner was because of Iraq’s capturing Prisoners of War (POW), the POW shown innocence and shock causing Gurganus to grief and confesses his true feelings about the subject of war in America. The theme of the Captive Audience is more on the form of past recollection; Allan becomes more self-aware of his country’s acts based on the recruits that usually are enlisted from backgrounds as a last effort of deciding towards career wise. As the story becomes more influenced on experience, Allan realizes that the you th of America is actually filled with fantasy and the youth treats the army as a way to be a hero. Gurganus’s issue with the recruitment of the military is that the recruits themselves do not know why that they are in the military. The whole passage itself goes on forth on the reason why the recruits are so young and inexperienced is because of the parents themselves.
